Last July 18, UP Sandigan was awarded with a Certificate of Recognition by the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (Dept. of Laboratory Medicine) during their 2nd Kabalikat Awards ceremony held at the NKTI Auditorium.

UP Sandigan was recognized for their "commitment and support to the voluntary blood donation program of the institute through the conduct of continuous mobile blood donation activities". UPS officers attended the ceremony with Dan Mendoza (Internal VP) receiving the certificate in behalf of our organization.

Petitioner alleges student body ‘biased’

MANILA, Philippines – A senior student of the University of the Philippines (UP) is asking a Quezon City court to prevent the university Student Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) from ruling on the alleged death by hazing last year of Cris Anthony Mendez.

Former National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) student council president and graduating student Ariel Paolo Ante, allegedly one of the last persons to see Mendez alive, has petitioned the QC Regional Trial Court Branch 83 for certiorari and prohibition with urgent application for injunctive relief.

Mendez, another UP student, died in a Quezon City hospital Aug. 27 last year allegedly due to injuries sustained during hazing.

Ante alleged the SDT was biased against him and the other students facing similar charges. Claiming his guilt had been prejudged, the petitioner said due process was no longer available to him under the circumstances.

Ante named as respondents the UP Student Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) and the university itself. He claimed he “was singled out by UP as responsible for Cris’ death” due to mounting pressure on the university to give justice to the dead student.

The university prosecutor filed six formal charges against him for allegedly participating in the conduct of alleged hazing activities, leaving Mendez in the hospital and failing to give information to authorities, and failing to comply with the directive of the UP vice chancellor for student affairs to give information on the circumstances surrounding Mendez’s death. Penalties ranged from suspension to expulsion.

Ante said that while it was inexcusable to take another person’s life, it was as inexcusable to violate the law.

Citing university rules, Ante said he was deprived of the right to a preliminary inquiry by an SDT member. Preliminary inquiry by a university prosecutor was not valid under the revised rules on fraternity and student organizations, Ante claimed.

Ante also asked the court to declare the formal charges, as well as SDT proceedings, void and of no effect. It asked the court to order the SDT or its members who conducted the “invalid” preliminary inquiry to inhibit themselves from further hearing the case.

The petition is the second to be filed against the university, its officials, and members of the SDT. Last November, Juan Paolo Fajardo, another respondent, filed a similar petition.

UP Sandigan participated as volunteers at the first Street Children's Festival last Jan. 26, 2008 held at Museo Pambata. We met Sir Mark Raymundo, a UPS alumnus, who also volunteered to help with his IBM workmates. We had fun helping with the registration of the kids, manning the entrance and helping with the various booths at the festival.

Taong 1898… isa ito sa pinakamahalagang yugto sa ating kasaysayan - taon kung kailan idineklara ang ating kalayaan at isinilang ang unang republika ng Asya. Isang maipagmamalaking bahagi ng ating kasaysayan, ngunit nababalot din ng mga lihim at kontrobersiya.

Ang dalawang pangunahing tauhan ng 1898, sina Emilio Aguinaldo at Andres Bonifacio - magkakampi nga ba o magkatunggali? Nagkaroon nga ba ng dayaan noong eleksyon sa Tejeros, kung saan nahirang na pangulo si Aguinaldo? Ibinenta nga ba niya ang ating bayan sa halagang P400,000? Ano ba ang mga tunay na pangyayari sa pagkamatay ni Andres Bonifacio?

Inalam ni Sandra Aguinaldo ang mga kasagutan sa mga katanungang ito. Binalikan niya ang kasaysayan sa pamamagitan ng mga libro, mga orihinal na journals na isinulat ng dalawang bayani, at mga museo at aklatan kung saan naroon ang mga dokumento ng Katipunan.

Nakausap rin ni Aguinaldo ang mga apo ni Bonifacio - na hanggang ngayon ay matindi pa rin ang galit kay Aguinaldo. Binisita rin ni Sandra sa mansyon ng mga Aguinaldo sa Kawit, sa pangalawang pamilya ng heneral sa Baguio, hanggang sa Maragondon-- ang lugar kung saan pinatay si Bonifacio.

Sino si Ginoong Bagonggahasa? Sa Paete, Laguna siya ay retiradong US Navy man na ipinagmamalaki ang kanyang kakaibang apelyido. Ang pinsan naman niya na Kapitan Barangay, desperadong papalitan ang pangalang ito. Pero mas matindi ang problema ng mga babaeng Bagongahasa. Marami sa kanila ang nais mag-asawa agad upang mabago ang kanilang apelyido.

Ilan lang ang mga Bagongahasa sa mga Pilipinong may problema sa kanilang pangalan. Ito ang kakaibang paksa ni Howie Severino sa dokumentaryong ito. Mula Laguna hanggang Ilocos, tutuklasin niya ang iba’t ibang reaksiyon ng mga Pilipino sa kanilang pangalan.

Hindi na nakapagpatuloy sa pag-aaral sa Maynila ang magkapatid na Pecpec. Dahil di sineseryoso ang kanilang pangalan, bumalik na lang sila sa bukid.

At hindi lang mga pangalan ng tao ang may isyu. Sa Pampanga, pilit palang pinalitan ng mga tiga Sexmoan ang pangalan ng kanilang bayan. Sa Ilocos, ipinagmamalaki naman ng mga residente ang pangalang Barangay Baliw.

Sa Ilocos Norte, nagkalat ang mga Ferdinand Marcos. Hinarap ni Howie ang tunay na Ferdinand Marcos Junior -- na nakatikim naman ng panunukso sa ibang bansa dahil sa palayaw niyang Bongbong. Si Howie mismo, itinatanong pa rin kung bakit Horacio ang ipinangalan sa kanya ng kanyang magulang!

Saan mo man sila makita, mapa-kalsada man, loob ng mall, at maging sa ibang bansa, siguradong makikilala mo sila. Sila ang mga tatak na kinalakhan at nakasanayan na nating makita, nagkaroon ng sariling pagkatao at personalidad dahil sa galing ng serbisyong ipinakita nila sa publiko. Sinong bata ang hindi nakakakilala kay Jollibee? Saan ka bibili ng school supplies at murang libro? Sa National Bookstore. At anong brand ng damit ang ine-endorso ni Richard Gomez? Bench. At saan ka pupunta para mag-shopping? SM.

Kada dekada, isang tatak ang umuusbong at nagiging bahagi ng ating kultura, umaayon sa mga pagbabago dala ng pagdaan ng panahon. Samahan si Sandra Aguinaldo balikan ang simula ng mga tatak na ito at alamin ang daan sa kanilang tagumpay sa pang-anibersaryong handog ng I-Witness ngayong Marso 5.

Mula sa pagiging isang maliit na ice cream store sa Cubao, naging isang higanteng fastfood chain ang Jollibee na binuo ng pamilyang Tan Caktiong taong 1975. Pero ano nga ba ang ginawa ng Jollibee para makamit ang kasalukuyan nitong tagumpay? Aalamin ni Sandra Aguinaldo ang sikreto ng Jollibee para mapanatili ang “langhap-sarap” nitong serbisyo at titignan ang epekto nito sa kultura natin bilang Pilipino.

Makikilala rin ni Sandra Aguinaldo ang “Nanay” sa likod ng tagumpay ng National Bookstore. Taong 1942 nang buksan ni Socorro Cancio-Ramos ang kauna-unahang National Bookstore sa Escolta, Manila. Dinanas na ang giyera, pinagdaanan ang martial law at tatlong EDSA revolution, pero hindi natinag ang NBS bilang “bookstore ng bayan.” Titignan ni Sandra ang papel na ginagampanan ng National Bookstore sa pamilyang Pinoy at sa sistemang pang-edukasyon ng ating bansa.

At mula kay Richard Gomez hanggang kay Piolo Pascual, tila lahat ng sikat na artista, dumaan bilang image model ng Bench. Ano nga ba ang katangian ng damit na ito at nahuli niya ang kiliti ng Pinoy pagdating sa larangan ng fashion?

Sa kulturang Pinoy, tila tanggap na tanggap ang mga bading. Pero iba ang kaso ng mga lesbiyana.
Ilang araw na lang ang hinihintay ni Nickie Mossman bago lumipad patungong Hong Kong upang mag-lounge singer. Pero ang pinapangarap na kasaganaan, may mapait na kapalit. Kasabay ng kanyang paglipad ay ang pagtalikod sa pagkataong dinala niya ng apatnapung taon.

Lesbiyana si Nickie. At kung hindi raw niya itatago ang pagkatao, hindi siya makapagtatrabaho bilang singer sa Hong Kong.

Kikilalanin ni Sandra Aguinaldo ang ilang lesbiyanang Pinay na patuloy na naghahanap ng pagkakakilanlan at pagtanggap sa lipunan.

Tulad ni Nickie, nahihirapan si Jessie Cocuera sa kanyang bagong trabaho bilang artista. Starstruck finalist si Jessie, at sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ay naranasan niyang magsuot ng mga pambabaeng damit! Alam ni Jessie na malilimitahan siya sa mga roles kung tuluyan siyang magpapaka-tomboy, kaya tanggap niyang kailangan niyang magpakababae sa ngalan ng trabaho.
Tinaguriang “lipstick lesbian” naman si “Dorothy,” babaeng hindi mo aakalaing tomboy dahil sa hitsura, pero sa loob ay pusong lesbiyana. Para maiwasan ang mababang pagtrato, pinili raw niyang itago ang katotohanang ito. Si Dorothy ay isang commercial model at beauty queen.

Tuwing Linggo ng Setyembre, animo’y piyesta sa kahabaan ng Taft Avenue. Dinadagsa ang lugar dahil sa taunang Bar Exams na kinukuha ng libu-libong estudyanteng umaasang maging abogado. Marami sa kanila, hangad pang mabilang sa mga pinuno ng ating bansa. Isa si Cris Mendez sa mga nangarap pumasa sa bar. Pero sa unang araw ng bar exams, sa halip na sa Taft Ave, sa huling hantungan hinatid si Cris ng kaniyang pamilya.

Sa dokumentaryong ito, susubukan alamin ni Howie Severino kung gaano nga ba kahalaga sa mga magiging abogado ang mapabilang sa isang fraternity. Papasukin ni Howie ang mundo ng UP Law School – na nakikilala ngayon hindi lang para sa mga lider na galing rito kundi para na rin sa mararahas nitong kapatiran.

Pilit na hahanapin ni Howie ang Sigma Rho, ang frat na itinuturo sa pagkamatay ni Cris Mendez. Makikilala rin niya ang Alpha Pi Beta, mortal na karibal ng Sigma Rho, na nakapatay na rin ng sarili nilang brod dahil sa hazing. Halos sampung taon na mula nang bawian ng buhay si Alex Icasiano sa kamay ng APB.

Sa isang makabagbagdamdaming eksena ng dokumentaryo, makikilala ng nanay ni Alex ang ina ni Cris Mendez. At matapos ang ilang linggo ng pag-aabang, makakaharap na rin ni Howie sa isang ekslusibong panayam ang ilang miyembro ng Sigma Rho.

It gives him hope that Sigma Rho will eventually choose to do the right thing.

Before the Lantern Parade last December 19, 2007, UP SANDIGAN held a Christmas pakain earlier that afternoon to feed the children around UP Diliman. This is also the last day of the tambayans around Gonzales Hall, so before we completely leave the memorable place, the Sandiganistas prepared goto, macaroons, biscuits to feed the children and accompanied these with sweets that they can take home.

We are very grateful for the ENCM boys (neighbor to the right) for carrying the second table and the cabinet--they were really heavy!well, you know what they say, "sino pa ba ang magtutulungan kungdi tayo-tayo lang din naman".

December 15, 2007, bumalik ang UP SANDIGAN sa Children's Joy Foundation para magbigay saya sa mga bata ngayong kapaskuhan. Pangatlong beses na ito na pagbisita ng mga Sandiganistas, at pangalawang beses sa taong ito (March 2007 iyong huli) at hindi pa din nila kami nakakalimutan. Masaya ang naganap na selebrasyon dahil sa makukulay na damit ng mga bata at sa mas madaming performances nilang binahagi sa amin.

UP SANDIGAN held their Christmas Party at the tambayan last December 13, 2007. It was quite a memorable celebration because it is the last Christmas Party of the Sandiganistas at the North Wing Tambayan. We enjoyed the food, the laughter, the usual lively conversation, but most of all, the members were overwhelmed by the full support of the alumni who came and gave their advices, encouragement and passed the message of the other alumni who were not able to come but are very much concerned with the present dilemma of our beloved org. We are very much grateful to all the alumni who came: Janeth, Rose Anne, Charisse, Ate Aye, Kuya Erwin, Ate France, Ate Sarah, Ms. Sheila, Ms. Roch, Ms. Christina and Kuya Paul. The present members will definitely keep in mind all the things that were said at the Christmas Party Meeting and do them with much fervor to keep the fire of social service burning for a longer period of time, because 30 years is not enough.

UPDATES ON THE CRIS MENDEZ CASE

Suspek sa pagpaslang kay Mendez, kakasuhan na.

Sapat na umano ang ebidensyang hawak ng awtoridad para maghain ng kaso ngayong buwan laban sa mga suspek sa pagpatay kay Cris Mendez, biktima ng hazing sa kamay ng mga hinihinalang kasapi ng Sigma Rho Fraternity (SR).

Ayon kay Roger Sususco, special investigator ng anti-terrorism Division ng National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), hinihintay na lamang nila ang testimonya ni Chief Inspector Filemon Porciuncula, medico-legal officer ng Quezon City Police District Crime Laboratory Office na nagsagawa ng autopsy kay Mendez, bago tapusin ang kanilang ulat at tuluyang magsampa ng kaso sa susunod na dalawang linggo.

Hindi pa masabi ni Sususco kung sino ang mga sasampahan at kung ano ang mga kasong ihahain laban sa kanila, ngunit maaari umanong makasuhan ang ilang mga nasangkot sa kanilang imbestigasyon.

Ilan sa ipinatawag sa imbestigasyon ng NBI ay mga opisyal ng Sigma Rho na sina Raul Grapilon at Ronald Chua, gayundin ang ilang miyembro nitong sina Ryan Bacay, Crispin Calimson, Reggie Agustin at Andoni Santos, pawang hinihinalang sangkot sa naganap na hazing.

Ipinatawag din ng NBI si Mikko Borra, estudyante ng UP na anak ng may-ari ng bahay na pinagdausan ng hazing. Naimbitahan din ang mag-amang Dr. Francisco at Miguel Cruz, na miyembro rin ng Sigma Rho.

Ayon kay Sususco, magkasama umanong nagsasmpa ng kaso ang NBI at QCPD matapos silang magkasundong magtulungan sa imbestigasyon.

Ani Atty. Joselito Olivares, abogado ng pamilya Mendez, lumalabas na mga miyembro umano ng Sigma Rho ang salarin sa pagkamatay ni Mendez batay sa ebidensyang nakalap ng NBI. Dagdag niya, inaasahan niyang lalabas na suspek ang mga nabanggit sa pahayagan.

Ayon kay Olivares, tuloy ang kasong isinampa nila sa Quezon City Regional Trial Court noong Oktubre 22 laban kay Cruz, dahil hindi umano nito ipinaalam agad sa pamilya ni Mendez ang sinapit ni Cris. Kasamang sinampahan ng kasong sibil sina Myrna at Miguel, mag-ina ni Cruz. Humingi umano ang pamilyang Cruz ng hanggang Disyember 14 para makasagot sa pamamagitan ng abogado.

Aniya, may mga taong lumalapit sa kanya upang aregluhin ang kaso, subalit hindi umano sila pumapayag. “Kahit pag-uusap lamang ay hindi mangyayari hangga’t hindi lumalantad ang mga maysala sa pagkamatay ni Mendez”, dagdag niya.

Samantala, dinidinig pa rin sa Student Disciplinary Tribunal ang kasong isinampa ng administrasyon ng UP laban sa 14 na opisyal ay miyembro ng Sigma Rho dahil umano sa paglabag ng rules on hazing and misconduct ng Unibersidad.

Important Announcement About UPS Tambayan

UP SANDIGAN's 30 long years at the North Wing Main Library has come to an end. The Main Library Administration has finally decided to push through with their plans on the reconstruction of the basement and reroofing of the said library. Unfortunately, this decision will affect all the tambayans around Gonzales Hall leaving the student orgs with no choice but to evacuate and find another place where they could stay.

Today, UP Sandigan received a letter informing us that we only have until December 14, 2007 (Friday) to clear the area. Due to this, our organization is facing the dilemma of finding an alternative meeting place. Without such, UPS may fall apart.

But there is still hope, UP Sandigan will not cease to exist as long as they still have the will to do social service and reach more filipino people who need help. A lost tambayan is just a challenge to further strengthen the bonds that ties us. Let's just all hope for the best for the Sandiganistas. - JSM

UP SANDIGAN held a Semopener for the second semester of the Academic Year of 2007-2008 last November 20, 2007. Everyone enjoyed the celebration as they shared food, laughter and fun together with our alumni, France Omana, Charisse Tagbago and Janeth Calantoc plus one applicant for this semester, Amei, who gladly joined in on the conversation and catching up of events about the UPS life.

We are all hoping for a better and stronger UP SANDIGAN this semester. Nothing can ever dampen our spirits, not when we already have an angel guarding and supporting UP SANDIGAN all the way!

Let's extend our social service to more people this sem guys :)

Sem-Opener '07 (1st sem)

Masayang nilunsad ng UP SANDIGAN ang selebrasyon ng pagbubukas ng unang semestre sa taong ito. Pinangunahan ni Jenny Beth Padro, ang bagong presidente, ang paghahati-hati ng mga dadalhin sa kainan. Naatasan ang bawat kumite na magdala ng kani-kanilang kanin, ulam, inumin at pati na panghimagas. Maraming dumalo sa tambayan at nakisalo sa tawanan, sa chikahan, at sa pagdudugtong ng pamilya. Sa huli, nabusog ang lahat sa mumunting salu-salong ito.

Nagsipagdatingan din ang mga alumni na sina Rose Anne Eugenio, Rienalyn Santos at Jan Michael Villas. Si Steve na nakihabol ay hindi rin nagpahuli sa handaang ito.

UPS 1st GenMeet

Last June 21, Thursday, UP Sandigan held their first general assembly at the tambayan. Plans for this semester were made starting off with the sem-opener on Wednesday, June 27, to be followed by a rummage sale that will be held on Saturday, June 30 at Krus na Ligas. The activities for the 30th anniversary were also brought up, which includes a jog for anniv around acad oval (July 13, Fri.), blood drive (July 17, Tue.), open tambayan (July 19, Thu.), an institution visit (July 21, Sat.), plus the production of the 30th anniversary t-shirts and other souvenirs for the said event. The 3oth UPS anniversary will be held on July 14, Saturday. - Swaz M.

Sandiganistas Integrated with the Children from the South through Pottery...

Last May 7, 2007, a group of Sandiganistas honored the invitation of Dr Marichu Carstensen, the founder of Lipeno Children's Foundation, to witness the latter's 9th Summer Art Workshop all the way down to Lipa, Batangas and to be teachers of pottery for a week. With Dan Mendez' prowess in sculpture and Janeth Calantoc and Maan Serias' ability to handle and play with kids (as shaped during Institutional Visits), the Lipeño children aging from 6 to 17 years old experienced to "throw" and shape, and then dab-with-water and then shape again clays which enabled them to produce figures of pots, candle holders, boats, faces, and a lot more.

Lipeño Scholars
Lipeño Children's Foundation is an initiative of Dr. Carstensen and her husband Mr. Morten Carstensen. Their scholars mainly come from the public schools around Lipa who have exuded academic excellence but due to financial strains may not really be able to achieve a holistic approach toward development. Mr. and Mrs. Carstensen, aside from providing means on how the scholars may definitely get into school all the way to tertiary level, also expose the children to different visual arts. Dr. Marichu, being a connoisseur herself (she actually owns Doc's candle), would make sure that the children would have month-long summer art workshops by personally inviting potential instructors and procuring the necessary art materials. She even offered a space in her Doc's candle compound where the fourteen children can learn, practice, and hopefully unearth their art skills. For this summer's event, aside from pottery which was scheduled on the last week, the kids were also exposed to sketching and oil painting.

Experience and Observations
As one of the 'teachers', the 4-day experience in Lipa was actually more of an opportunity for the Sandiganistas to see an event of another true social service. Mr. and Mrs. Carstensen and the Lipeño Children's Foundation can indeed be touted as a picture of paying-it-forward and altruism. The scholars, on the other hand, were a representation of very engaged and engaging students. Anyone witnessing how they finger and play their clays will also be in surprise just like how we were. They are all smart, imaginative, playful, and appreciative of their surroundings. Both the sponsors and the scholars are worthy to be envied - the sponsors for their gratuitous acts and the children for their skills and talents. – Janeth C.

That workshop was really amazing! I was inspired by Ms. Marichu and her outreach programs, the way she look at life and how she was able to help so many people, especially those children in having good education and developing their potential to be great individuals in the future. The children were very friendly and very determined to learn and I guess their status in life did not become a hindrance for them. I learned a lot from that experience. – Maan S.

Summer Donation

Summer vacation. Everyone had their own plans, where to go and what to do for the next two months free of school-related activities. Same went for most sandiganistas, but that did not prevent them from helping out when a fellow sandiganista seek for support by donating clothes that would be distributed to the fire victims of Libis, Sikatuna village that happened last May 11. With just a simple text, many had replied enthusiastically to give clothes and a week after, handful of bags had been distributed to a number of affected families. This just shows that sandiganistas are willing to help all through out the school year, may it be during a jam-packed first and second semesters or during the summer break. - Jen T.

UP Sandigan applicants for this semester held their batch project today, Mar. 21, 2007 at Little Angels Learning Center at New Manila, QC. Mars, Mikko, Abby and Johnnel prepared the program and the food for this activity. Cha also had a special part with her story telling session with the kids. UP Sandigan @ Children's Joy Foundation.

UP Sandigan held anothre institution visit this semester at the Children’s Joy Foundation in Project Eight, Quezon City together with three of our applicants, johnelle, mars (my buddy) and mikko on march 17, 2007. We were welcomed with such warmth by Ma’am Shirley, her staff and all the kids there.

The program started with Janeth’s opening remarks and introduction of the organization.

A getting-to-know-you activity stirred the children’s energy for the rest of the afternoon and made them comfortable with their ates and kuyas. The kids were really friendly that we didn’t have a hard time asking them to participate. In fact, the moment we came in, they started greeting us with cute little smiles on their faces, as if we’ve been there before. Of course, UP Sandigan has visited the place before, but that was years ago, some of the mems haven’t been in this institution that’s why it was still a first for some of us, actually.

After the icebreaker, we played ate jen’s math game. Buti na lang wala si jan!hehe. ubos kaming mga hindi adik sa math niyan!!! (ako lang yata.basta taga-cal). We also had a creative drama activity prepared for them with real cool props by dan the fa man of course, cherry and cherry’s mum, with some help from ca and me.

In turn, they made us happy when they showcased the plucking and strumming of their guitars, the thumping of percussion instruments—particularly that k-hon favorite, and a violin performance on the side.

They also danced for us like three times and sang us some Yeng Constantino song “Hawak Kamay”, who recently joined in deal or no deal and chose the institution as the recipient of whatever she got from the game.

After the activities, the children ate the food that we prepared for them, care of ate marie from the kiosk in front of our tambayan, hmm…we’ve made some real good connections din pala. and then we left them with some token that the kids can use.

UP Sandigan held a workparty today at (our so beloved) the tambayan.

Everyone contributed to the clean up and repair with King, the long-time-no-see King, arriving earliest even though he didn’t seem like he knew there was an activity that day. But the fact that he was there made things easier with his dusting, sweeping, making igib and painting of the table.

Although only a few came, it was a job well done. kitang-kita yan sa pics hehehe.

Also, many thanks to dan who provided the blue cobalt paint and for the siomais that he delivered…late.haha

With every clean-up that we make, we discover more and more things about the members of UP Sandigan through the papers that we get to dig from the pile of mess covered in dusts and insect jebs. My gawd, there were certificates that are as old as our dear maan and jenny.

Is this true? Well, I don’t know. For all I know, there’s nothing wrong with admitting that you were once a member of a socio-civic org. This just shows you where your desire to do social service started or came from or encouraged. Diba?!

This event was held in cooperation with National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Blood Donor Program. A total of 32 students donated their blood for NKTI. UP Sandigan at House of Refuge

Last Feb. 10, 2007, Saturday, UP Sandigan held its first institutional visit at an orphanage at Marikina, the House of Refuge. It was attended by its members and its applicants. There were games headed by Rodelia Pascua and storytelling by Charisse Tagbago. Yang and Rose Ann also performed a song number. The kids in turn also gave out two perfomances. It was a fun and fulfilling day both for all participants.

The cold day started with yang and jenny making tambay at the UPS tambayan, with the latter doing something for her medschool (naks!) and the former answering her problem set in economics.

Then our scholar came, joy. She’s so excited for her prom that triggered me to be excited for her as well. And because of this, joy has a dress na for her prom with matching gold shoes. Hehe.

UPS Blood Drive

This activity was organized in cooperation with the Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC) and their staff. Operation Alaminos

UP Sandigan opened the new school year with a big activity dubbed "Operation Alaminos" last June 10-11, 2006. Operation Alaminos was organized through the efforts of UPS officers especially ExtComm VP Rodelia 'Yang' Pascual with the help of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Alaminos and the City Government of Alaminos City, Pangasinan. It was a two-day event of work and pleasure in which Saturday was for the Leadership Workshop and Sunday for the Hundred Islands sight-seeing.

Youth Unleashed was the title of the leadership workshop held at Bolo Beach with the members of the Alaminos SK Federation as participants. The program opened with remarks from Alaminos City Mayor, Hon. Hernani Braganza, Ms. Margielou Orange Humilde (SK Fed. President), and UP Sandigan president, Ms. Janeth Calantoc. The actual workshop started with an Amazing Race-style game which served as a team building tool. After that, seven of UP Sandigan alumni took turns in explaining and discussing Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. After lunch, a guest speaker taught the participants about organizational skills and development. Another alumna explained relationship-oriented leadership values which was followed by a focus group discussion. Then, a UPS member explained task-oriented leadership. The workshop ended with project proposal-making by the participants.

That night, a mini-immersion happened in the fishing village of Bolo Beach. UPS members were paired off to visit families to talk about their life and also to experience, even for a while, the way they live in the village. After the immersion, the members regrouped to watch and enjoy the musical performance by a local band.

The second day was reserved for fun and pleasure as the whole organization island-hopped the most popular attraction of Alaminos City, the famous Hundred Islands. Members were able to see most of the islands and enjoyed lunch at the Governor's Island where the 'Resthouse ni Kuya' from PBB Teen Edition was built. The highlight of the day was when most of the members took turns in jumping from a cliff in a cave of one of the islands. It was a perfect ending to a very enjoyable and very productive weekend at Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

Maaari pa po itong bumaba kung mas marami ang pupunta. Kaya sana po ay makapunta tayong lahat.

Kasama rin sa program ang Talent Show ng apps. Sige na, punta ka na. Siguradong masisiyahan ka! Time na rin for the newbies and the oldies to meet up, hehe. Ang Challenge Day (CD) ng apps ay sa parehong araw gaganapin. 1-4pm sa tambayan. Kung may time rin po kayo ay tara na't sumali.

Ang mga pupunta po sa sem-ender ay sana mag-text kay Jen (09167905723) para po alam namin kung sino ang mga antayin sa tambayan on the said date. Salamat po!

UPS goes to Holy Trinity

Last Saturday, March 11, 2006, the UP Sandigan finally had the institution visit for this second semester.

After how many months that the institution visit was postponed, at last, this came true in the Holy Trinity Home for the Children, Fairview, Quezon City. This was the second time that the UPS visited this institution after three years. We are surprised to see the big changes there since we are informed that the old house was just a small one and could not shelter as much as 100 children which it can hold at present. This is a home for girls and boys who were found out or discovered or referred to the nuns who were taking charge of them, from the different provinces. These boys and girls are either single-abandoned, that is, one parent is lacking or the other would not be able to support that child anymore; or double-abandoned where both parents are not capable of giving the child proper care and nourishment.

At present there are about 41 kids and five of them are already in Calamba where they study high school and college. The youngest in the house is about five years old.

The program was supposed to start at 2 pm, unfortunately, it was not followed and started by 2:45pm. It was a very exciting experience to be a part in this institution visit. Part of the program was the getting-to-know game at the beginning; the usual games which is 'Stop Dance' and also the four applicants who were there also presented their skits and song numbers.

Part of the said program was a story-telling about a Bible story, “Elisha and the Widow”. It was followed by having a memory verse from the Bible which is I Thessalonians 5:18 'In everything, give thanks...’ We're so happy to see the children memorize their verse. After listening to the story, there was also a puzzle game for them. The group, the children, the members, and the applicants, was divided into four groups and each was handed a puzzle to be solved.The puzzle was their verse. They're fast. Wala pang 1 minute!

Then after the puzzle, we also let them draw or write anything that they want to thank God for in a cartolina using colored pens.

They were so eager to draw and some of these are: the Holy Trinity building, the nuns who have been their moms and dads, the food, the school service, the rain (because it rained earlier), the sun, their dresses, and many other things. Then we let them speak in front why they draw such things.

We could see the faith in their hearts and how they were really brought up in this institution.

They are the ones who have become the inspiration of many people, including UPS, to really reach out. Because we believe that we change people, we change the world in just reaching out for a child's hand.

People don't care how much we know, until they know how much we care.

Sing-along Night

The night was filled with singing voices and laughter as the UP Sandigan Internals Committee headed a videoke session held last March 4, 2006 at Arden Gonzales' boarding house rooftop. The bonding activity went on from 7pm until 11pm. The said activity was attended by 12 members, namely Jen, Rose Ann, Riena, MJ, Swaz, Sarah, France, Arden with Andy, Jan, Maan, Janeth and Kris.

Everyone gave their best shot as they sang songs of their choices. There was also a little alcohol drinking with snacks to give more life to the party. The activity ended with an awarding ceremony for 3 categories: the "Parang Professional Award" given to Rose Ann for getting a score of 97; the "Birit Kung Birit" and "Pinoy Pop Superstar" given to Jan for his total performance and tireless singing for the whole night.

GK1MB: Isang Milyong Bayani

The UP Sandigan regularly participates in build-house projects done by different organizations. This time, UPS was invited to join the Gawad Kalinga Youth Build last February 25 thru Mr. Jed Juntereal, Ira’s brother, an external committee member.

GK Youth Build was just a part of the whole day event prepared entitled GK1MB: Isang Milyong Bayani. On that Saturday morning, after assembling at the AS Steps, the whole GK-troop went to GK Sto. Niño along Mindanao Ave., QC. The day started with a program and a mass. Some of the people who were already granted a brand-new house said their thank you messages. Other officers of the GK also delivered a few messages.

After that, everyone went to work. Most of what the volunteers did was to transfer aggregates to a different excavation to level up the ground. This was done through an assembly-line strategy where one is to pass the materials to the person to his/her right. This happened for about an hour before everyone had to have a water break. While the volunteers were working, house blessings were done alongside with it. The work ended and lunch was served. The food was prepared by the residents of the site.

The group was to head straight to Quezon Circle for the culminating event. Unfortunately, most of the UPS members decided to go home instead for they were already tired. Although this just happened for a short time, the UPS members did got to mingle with the other residents of the Sto. Niño site.

Up Sandigan held its Sportsfest last February 4, 2005, organized by the Internal committee and was headed by Ms. Jen Tesorero. The event started later than expected, 9:30 am, with most of the members present.

As usual ,before anything began, prayer was said to guide the event and the members to avoid possible injuries. People were required to warm up to wake all those sleeping muscles and stressed UP minds. The weather complied and the event was pushed through successfully.

The games were all fun, some were even Survivor-inspired. The members were grouped into two in each of the games. The games were: Out-of-the-tali race, Slingshot contest—where Vernie stood out, shooting many targets, Spelling bee, Tug-of-War—wherein hands were hurt badly and almost scraped just to defend their dignity, Dodgeball, Sports relay and Shoot-that-water-balloon.

Some games were done at the parking lot, in front UPS tambayan, there was one held at lagoon and all of the after-lunch games were held at the Sunken Garden to occupy a wider space for the recharged energy of the members.

UPS Activities for January

UPS will be conducting its Leadership Training on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8am. Work Party will follow afterwards. Applicants and members are required to attend this activity.

Our Sportsfest will be held on January 28, Saturday, 8am.

Both the Blood Drive and our participation in ACLE has been cancelled.

The planned Book Fair was also cancelled.

UPS Welcomed New Applicants

UPS warmly welcomed new aspiring members through an Acquaintance Party held last Dec. 7, 2005 at the UPS Tambayan. Five dedicated students from different colleges, recruited by some of the members, attended the said event.

The party started with an opening prayer followed by a welcome message from the president of the organization, Ms. Arden Gonzales. A short orientation regarding the flow of the application process was given by the MemComm Head, Ms. Janeth Calantoc. Afterwards, a series of games were played for fun and entertainment but which also served as a bonding activity for the members and the applicants. Food was served after the games. The party ended with the applicants drawing lots to pick out their buddies who will help them during the application process for the whole semester. - JV

UPS Upcoming Activities

An Acquaintance Party will be held at the UPS Tambayan Wednesday, Dec. 07, 2005 at 2:30 PM. All members and applicants are invited to join in an afternoon of fun and games with free food. It will also be a chance for the applicants to get to know more about the organization, its members, and their co-applicants.

There will be a Rummage Sale on Saturday, Dec 10, 2005 9-12 AM. Everyone is encouraged to bring rummage stuff (clothes, books, accessories, etc.) until Friday to the UPS tambayan.

After rounds of voting, it was decided that the UPS Annual Christmas Party will be held this year on Dec. 14, 2005, Wednesday 6PM at the UPS Tambayan.

Christmas Caroling

Namiss mo ba ang unang caroling? Sayang at namiss mo rin ang saya. Matapos ang ilang araw na pag-iensayo ng mga vocal chords ng mga members ay natuloy din ang caroling nitong Dec. 3, 2005. Salamat at nag-paunlak si Ms. Glen, ang butihing tita ni Maan Serias, na ang “UP Sandigan Carolers” ay mabisita at makantahan silang magkakaibigan. Ang caroling na ito ay naglalayong makapag-raise ng karagdagang halaga sa ating pondo at para na rin magkaroon ng bonding moments ang mga miyembro. Sa ganitong activity rin naipapamalas ng mga miyembro ang kanilang galing sa pagkanta at pag-lip synch.

Dito ay nais na ring magpasalamat ng UP Sandigan sa ating alumnong walang sawang sumusuporta sa organisasyon, si Mr. Achilles Dianopra o Kuya Aki (salamat na rin po sa libreng pakain).
